In 1881 a telephone line run was run through town. The Telephone Company began in 1882 when a telephone line was run from Independence. The telephone was at the post office. It was incorporated in 1902. The telephone bought a building from the Citizen Herald in 1909. In 1916 a 13,200 volt line was run from Waterloo to Jesup. In 1949 Farmer's Mutual opened at 1531 Young Street. Today the business is still on Young Street.
